Newsday (N.Y.): Winning a World Series hasn't changed the Cubs' Joe Maddon

MESA, Ariz. — This is familiar territory to Joe Maddon. Not being manager of a World Series champion — “Kind of nice,” he understated — but Arizona, where he spent much of his career as part of the Angels’ organization.

For 30 years he was a part of the Angels, from playing for them in the minors to being a scout and a coach and on occasion an interim manager.

Newsday (N.Y.): Joe Maddon’s Cubs have score to settle with Mets

MESA, Ariz. — Joe Maddon believes in time-tested methods and items. His transportation is a ’76 Dodge Tradesman van. His spectacles are horn-rimmed, popularized in the 1960s. And, not unlike most major-league manager, he understands great pitching is the essence of baseball.

As was confirmed in last year’s National League Championship Series by the Mets against Maddon’s Cubs.

MESA, Ariz. — He began with a jolt of Springsteen that was loud enough to be heard over a jet engine and certainly could be heard through the training complex.

Joe Maddon was making a first impression on a Chicago Cubs team that for five straight seasons had finished last in the National League Central.
