LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA -- Around the third hole, which would have been his 12th since he started on the back nine Sunday, Brian Gay concedes he thought about the magic number, 59.

"I'd made a bunch in a row," he said after a sixth straight birdie, "and I didn't know where I stood. I started to write it down, and I said, 'Forget about it. I'll just figure it out later.'"

Global Golf Post: Clinton Would Bring A-List to Hope

LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA -- The first thing to understand is that despite the word play, the tournament is not "Hopeless." A better description would be troubled. Or, perhaps, inconsequential. In modern lingo, the Bob Hope Classic no longer moves the needle.

It has become just another sporting event in a world of too many "just another" sporting events.

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Not a bad team, Marcus Allen and Eric Dickerson. Allen a Heisman Trophy winner, both Pro Football Hall of Famers. They could carry the ball. Now they are concerned with how the ball carries.

The subject is golf. They are partners in the Bob Hope Classic, that marathon event in the California desert, five days -- four for the amateurs such as Allen and Dickerson -- 90 holes, a $5 million purse for the pros.

We were happy for small favors, pleased when people such as Bing Crosby and Bob Hope gave us golf tournaments that were as much about entertainment as competition.
